“Phra Chakrawatarn” – The Biggest Khon Performance of the year 2024

Celebrate the Majesty of Thai Tradition with the Foundation for the Promotion of Arts and Crafts’ Latest Khon Masterpiece

The Foundation for the Promotion of the Arts and Crafts is proud to present the most anticipated Khon performance of the year, “Phra Chakrawatarn,” a spectacular show that continues nearly two decades of preserving and promoting traditional Thai performing arts. Under the royal patronage of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, this annual Khon production offers audiences a rare chance to witness one of Thailand’s most revered art forms, combining dance, drama, music, and stunning visuals.

This year’s performance is extra special, as it honors two monumental royal celebrations: the 92nd birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother on August 12, 2024, and the 6th cycle birthday of His Majesty the King on July 28, 2024. In recognition of these auspicious events, the foundation has chosen to stage the powerful episode “Phra Chakrawatarn”, a story of divine intervention and triumph over evil, symbolizing the protection and care the Chakri Dynasty has always extended to the Thai people.

A Royal Legacy of Khon Preservation

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s personal commitment to keeping Khon alive for future generations is encapsulated in her famous statement:

“My loss is the nation’s gain.”

For nearly 20 years, the Foundation for the Promotion of the Arts and Crafts has carried this torch forward, ensuring that the beauty of Khon and its cultural significance remain accessible to all Thai people. Every year, the foundation’s performances provide an opportunity to immerse oneself in this classical art form, which has been intricately woven into the nation’s cultural heritage.

A Press Event Fit for Royalty

On September 3, 2024, a press conference was held at the Thailand Cultural Centre to officially announce this year’s Khon performance. Attendees included Thanpuying Charungjit Teekhara, Royal Secretary to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, and prominent foundation committee members. Each shared stories of Her Majesty’s lifelong dedication to Khon, emphasizing its importance as a symbol of Thai identity and tradition.

Key figures such as Mrs. Yupha Thaweewatanakitborworn, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, and Dr. Nipa Sophasamrit, President of the Bunditpatanasilpa Institute, discussed the foundation’s role in nurturing new generations of Khon performers. National Artists Mr. Pramet Bunyachai and Mr. Sutsakorn Chaisem shared insights on scriptwriting, dialogue, and stage design, while Dr. Supachai Chan Suwan, the show’s director, gave a glimpse into the epic scale of the production.

Phra Chakrawatarn” – A Divine Saga Unfolds

This year’s Khon episode, “Phra Chakrawatarn,” draws from the Ramayana, a story of gods and demons. It begins with Indra and the gods pleading with Phra Narai (Vishnu) to descend from the heavens and rid the world of evil. He incarnates as Phra Rama, while Phra Lakshmi takes form as Nang Sida. This sets the stage for the heroic battle between Phra Rama and Ravana, whose kidnapping of Nang Sida triggers an epic war between good and evil.

Audiences will witness the unfolding drama, from Ravana’s deceitful plot to lure Phra Rama away using a golden deer to Nang Sida’s abduction and the eventual clash of armies. The battle scenes are further brought to life by the exquisite performances of young Khon actors, who have been trained by Thailand’s top classical dance masters.

A Showcase of Thai Cultural Excellence

The grandeur of this year’s Khon performance extends beyond the storytelling. Attendees will be treated to stunning visuals, including intricately designed costumes, majestic stage sets, and a live orchestra playing traditional Thai music. The meticulous attention to detail reflects the foundation’s dedication to authenticity, ensuring that each element of the performance adheres to the rich traditions of Khon.
