Have you ever wondered why gods of wealth are often shown with round, full bellies? At Ticy City’s God’s City, we’ve been exploring this idea. Today, let’s talk about two well-known deities – Janbhala and Poo Kuihook – who bring blessings of wealth and happiness.
Janbhala: The Generous Bodhisattva
Janbhala is a popular figure in Vajrayana Buddhism. He’s often shown with a big, happy belly, symbolizing his generosity. His form represents abundance and the ability to share.
He is similar to Kubera, the Hindu god of wealth, and in Thai culture, he’s linked to Thao Wessuwan, a protector of wealth. Janbhala is believed to bring blessings in five forms, each tied to different aspects of prosperity:
- Green Janbhala helps with energy and protection.
- White Janbhala clears obstacles and bad karma.
- Yellow Janbhala represents ultimate wealth and the cycle of life.
- Red Janbhala brings wisdom and success.
- Black Janbhala helps people overcome ignorance.
Poo Kuihook: The Smiling Wealth God
In Chinese Mahayana temples, you’ll often see Poo Kuihook – a plump, smiling god with his belly showing. While he’s sometimes confused with Phra Sangkachai, Poo Kuihook is distinct. He carries a sack filled with treasures and a rosary, symbolizing his ability to give wealth, food, and healing to those in need.
Poo Kuihook is one of the 28 deities of wealth in Chinese belief, but his blessings are given to those who are honest and hardworking. His figure is often shown with children climbing on him, representing prosperity through family and community.
In his earlier life, Poo Kuihook was a Zen monk named Khyitshi. Before he passed away, he left behind a message that many believe shows he was a form of Metteyya Bodhisattva, the future Buddha.
Why the Chubby Figures?
So, why do Janbhala and Poo Kuihook have round bellies? Their chubby figures represent abundance, joy, and the ability to give. They remind us that true wealth is not just about money, but about generosity, happiness, and creating a fulfilling life.
Next time you visit God’s City at Ticy City, take a moment to visit their shrines. Whether you’re seeking wealth, success, or simply more happiness, these deities show us that abundance starts with an open heart.
