A Park Built on Generosity and Vision
Developed in honor of His Majesty King Rama X’s 72nd birthday on July 28, 2024, PTT Public Company Limited collaborated with government agencies, private organizations, and local communities to transform a once-abandoned 10-rai plot into a thriving park. In just five months (March–July 2024), the area was revitalized into a green retreat that enhances both the city’s landscape and its transport network.
His Majesty personally named the park “Prem Pracha Wanarak,” meaning “a garden that brings happiness and delight to the people.” This name reflects the dedication to improving urban living through sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
What to Expect at Prem Pracha Wanarak
More than just a park, Prem Pracha Wanarak offers a variety of features that blend nature, education, and connectivity.
- Lush Greenery and Relaxation Areas – The park is home to 39 species of trees and 19 varieties of shrubs, providing much-needed shade and biodiversity in the city.
- Canal Connectivity – Situated along Prem Prachakorn Canal, the park integrates with Bangkok’s transportation systems, linking road (Vibhavadi Rangsit), rail (Red Line – Thung Song Hong Station), water transport, and even air routes.
- Chol Withee Theerapat Exhibition Hall – This learning center highlights the King’s initiatives on water conservation and sustainable development. The exhibition is divided into three sections:
- “Chol Wattana Vitee” – Exploring the evolving role of water in daily life.
- “Chol Thee Rachathan” – Showcasing the King’s vision for sustainable water management, blending traditional wisdom with modern technology.
- “Chol Wiwat Phuea Pracha” – Presenting ten successful royal projects focused on water restoration.
During the opening ceremony, His Majesty planted a Burmese padauk tree, grown from a seed linked to PTT’s 100-millionth reforestation tree in Nakhon Ratchasima, while Her Majesty Queen Suthida planted a bullet wood tree (Pikun), symbolizing peace and harmony.
A Model for Sustainable Urban Parks
Prem Pracha Wanarak is designed with three key principles in mind:
- Preservation – Protecting native plant species, including the weeping fig and Bodhi tree.
- Balance – Restoring urban ecology by introducing diverse plant species and creating a natural habitat for wildlife.
- Expansion – Elevating urban parks to serve as sustainable green spaces that integrate with the city’s transport, education, and recreational systems.
Reviving the Prem Prachakorn Canal
The Prem Prachakorn Canal has played a vital role in Bangkok’s history since its construction during King Rama V’s reign. Stretching over 50 kilometers, it once served as a key waterway connecting Wat Sommanat in Bangkok to Bang Pa-In, Ayutthaya. However, rapid urbanization led to pollution, encroachment, and environmental degradation.
Since November 5, 2017, His Majesty has led a major restoration project to bring the canal back to life. Efforts include:
- Water Quality Improvement – Dredging, flood prevention, and wastewater treatment to restore the canal’s ecosystem.
- Community Resettlement – Developing sustainable housing solutions for those living along the canal.
- Recreational and Learning Spaces – Creating parks, sports facilities, and eco-learning centers to enhance community engagement.
Prem Pracha Wanarak stands as a key milestone in this long-term revitalization effort, demonstrating how urban development and environmental preservation can go hand in hand.
