Its core and sides are dug 4 meters below the riverbed to capture underground water, while the weir height is kept under 2 meters to allow excess water to flow over, reducing erosion and preventing sediment buildup, all while naturally storing water.

Maintenance is simple and can be managed by local workers, without needing specialized equipment. Plus, the materials are readily available in the area, further cutting costs on logistics and construction.

Once the weir is in place, it increases water availability around it, supporting local agriculture and enabling farmers to diversify crops rather than sticking to monoculture.

The benefits don’t stop there. The weir also helps address the shortage of raw water for drinking water production, as demonstrated in Phrae Municipality, which supports 70,000 residents and 14,000 households. It improves groundwater storage, providing a year-round source of shallow wells for local use.

In addition, the weir fosters community involvement, reducing water conflicts during dry seasons, preventing labor migration, and improving overall quality of life. It even becomes a recreational space for the community.

The Soil-Cement Core Weir also contributes to environmental conservation by preserving upstream areas, enhancing forest moisture, and providing water and food for wildlife. It helps mitigate flooding, bank erosion, landslides, and flash floods. The weir’s design even allows for fish migration and spawning.

By retaining surface water, it reduces the risk of forest fires, as the increased moisture helps the forest floor stay wet for longer. It also slows the flow of water into the sea, conserving water for a more extended period.
