The Best Urban Lung in Asia
One Day Trip
As eco-friendly travel trends become more than just a fad, many areas and organizations are promoting sustainable tourism. This approach invites travelers to experience the charm of local communities while enjoying the surrounding natural beauty. Ticy City had the opportunity to join the “Inviting Nature Lovers for a Slow, Low-Carbon Trip” @Bang Krachao, and it was not only fun but also a part of an eco-friendly initiative for our planet.
This trip was organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Chachoengsao Office, led by Mr. Chirasak Oumurai, Director of TAT Chachoengsao Office, in collaboration with the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), led by Mr. Manutsawin Boontawee, Manager of Administrative Division, DASTA Bang Krachao, and MONOWHEEL, an importer and distributor of small electric vehicles. The trip featured a low-carbon travel route, promoting nature-friendly and low-carbon tourism, allowing participants to experience the city’s ozone-rich atmosphere and the charming local way of life. It was a truly valuable and fun one-day sustainable tourism trip.
Bang Krachao, also known as the “Green Lung of Bangkok,” is a man-made island in Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province, surrounded by 12,000 rai of green space and encircled by the Chao Phraya River. It has been dubbed the “Best Urban Lung in Asia” by Time Asia magazine in 2006.
For this trip, Ticy City and participants followed the Low Carbon Tourism route, minimizing carbon emissions and environmental impact by using electric scooters to travel through scenic and shady paths while learning about the local community.
The “Inviting Nature Lovers for a Slow, Low-Carbon Trip” @Bang Krachao started in the morning at Wat Bang Krasob in Bang Krachao, Samut Prakan. The first stop was the Hom Pajak to learn how to make traditional desserts from local Nipa palm fruit and taste various snacks and drinks made from it. This plant, which grows abundantly in the area, is useful from leaves to roots.
After completing activities at the first stop, the journey continued to the second stop at the Bang Nam Phueng Homestay Community Enterprise for lunch. Along the way, participants engaged in an environmental activity, pouring beneficial microorganisms into a canal to improve water quality.
Lunch at the Bang Nam Phueng Homestay was made from fresh, local ingredients, including savory dishes and desserts like Nipa palm fruit in syrup, beautifully served in traditional Thai-style trays.
The third stop was the Bang Kobua Community Tourism Promotion Club, where participants took a carbon-free boat ride to collect trash from the canal. The boat passed through a tunnel of Nipa palm trees while participants enjoyed the lush scenery and learned about the community’s waste management. Ticy City didn’t miss trying the famous local dish, “Lotus Petal Miang with Salt and Chili,” which had a unique and delicious flavor. Participants also enjoyed foot soaking and massage in the traditional Bang Kobua way, providing a relaxing end to the trip.
On the way back, participants rode along small roads through natural paths by the canal, surrounded by lush greenery, providing a refreshing and serene experience away from the city’s rush and PM2.5 pollution.
