Right now, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t heard Apt, Rose’s latest chart-topping track featuring Bruno Mars. With its catchy “A-pa-teu” hook, Apt has taken off, and it’s all thanks to a popular drinking game in South Korea.
The song Apt (아파트) draws its name and inspiration from the “Apartment Game,” a simple, lively party game that Rose enjoys and that’s become a favorite at Korean drinking gatherings.
Here’s how it works: the game requires at least two players, with one acting as the caller. Players chant “A-pa-teu, A-pa-teu” while stacking their hands on top of one another, building an “apartment” floor-by-floor. The group agrees on the “number of floors” for the apartment—say, seven. As hands stack, each new “floor” adds a number, and the person whose hand lands on the final floor takes a drink.
This game is a staple for young Koreans, and Apt is helping it reach even more fans, blending pop culture with a bit of Korean party tradition.
This isn’t the first time Korean pop culture has gone global through entertainment. From Dae Jang Geum, which spotlighted Korean cuisine, to Squid Game, which introduced the world to dalgona candy, South Korea has mastered using cultural elements as “soft power” to connect worldwide.
With Apt now at over 203 million YouTube views, we’re likely to see the “Apartment Game” making its way to parties in Thailand soon, too.
