First Restaurant to Serve Fresh Wasabi in Bangkok
In the heart of Asoke, Tamaruya Honten, the legendary Japanese BBQ restaurant, has moved from its previous location in Isetan to a newly decorated modern Japanese-style setting. Known for its fresh and flavorful BBQ dishes, Tamaruya Honten continues to captivate meat lovers and BBQ enthusiasts alike.
Established in December 2009 at Isetan, Tamaruya Honten was one of the pioneers of Japanese-style BBQ in Bangkok and the first to serve fresh wasabi, grated from sharkskin to achieve the finest texture and a perfect balance of spicy and aromatic flavors, complementing the grilled meats.
After the closure of Isetan, Tamaruya Honten relocated to the 1st floor of the FICO Place Building in Asoke (Sukhumvit 21), offering the same fresh wasabi and exceptional service to satisfy discerning palates.
The founder of Tamaruya Honten, Mr. Hiroyuki Moshizuki, explains that the name of the restaurant translates to “delicious happiness.” With a menu featuring premium grilled meats and fresh wasabi, it introduces a unique culinary experience to Bangkok.
Being descendants of a family that owns a wasabi farm and a renowned food manufacturing company, established in 1875 during the Meiji period, the restaurant ensures the authenticity and quality of its ingredients.
The inspiration behind serving fresh wasabi stems from the founder’s experience of finding the commercially available wasabi too spicy and pungent during visits to Japanese restaurants in Thailand. Hence, many Japanese restaurants in Thailand resort to using powdered wasabi due to its affordability compared to fresh wasabi directly imported from Japan, which can cost between 7,000 to 12,000 Baht per kilogram.
With a mission to introduce authentic wasabi flavors to Thai consumers, Tamaruya Honten offers freshly grated wasabi sourced directly from their farm, ensuring the best taste and aroma.
Renowned for its high-quality ingredients, including Japanese beef, Thai-French beef, and Australian beef, expertly sliced by skilled chefs, Tamaruya Honten provides a wide selection of meats and seafood suitable for grilling.
Special grills designed to evenly distribute heat, along with a variety of condiments and side dishes such as Japanese clam soup, seaweed soup, garlic fried rice, grilled vegetables, kimchi, and pickled vegetables, enhance the dining experience.
Moreover, the restaurant offers a range of beef tongue dishes, including salted beef tongue, crispy beef tongue, thick-cut beef tongue, salted beef tongue with wasabi, and beef tongue with green onions.
Customers can opt for à la carte orders or set menus, which include Japanese rice, soup, side dishes, green tea, and ice cream, at reasonable prices, catering to BBQ enthusiasts and beef lovers.
Located on the 1st floor of FICO Place Building (adjacent to Hilton Bangkok Sukhumvit), near BTS Asoke Exit 3 / MRT Sukhumvit Exit 2, Tamaruya Honten welcomes guests from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
