Explore the Rich History of Thonburi: Phra Ratchawang Derm – “Where the Past Resides”

The Ancient City

As the year draws to a close, if you haven’t made any travel plans yet, Ticy Ticy recommends exploring the significant historical sites in Thailand with a journey back in time to Thonburi, the former royal palace known as “Phra Ratcha Wang Derm” (Thonburi Palace) where history comes alive. A rare opportunity awaits you to commemorate the great King Taksin the Great, who ascended the throne as the monarch of Thonburi Sri Mahasamut on December 28, 1987. This date, December 28th, is a significant day in Thai history as it marks the 256th anniversary of the establishment of Thonburi. Don’t miss out on this unique chance.

Especially on this special occasion, let’s pay our respects to the great King Taksin the Great, who determinedly led the country and transformed Thonburi into a thriving city. His reign left an indelible mark on the land.

For the opening of “Phra Ratchawang Derm” to the public, the historical preservation foundation, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Navy, is offering free admission from December 16th to December 28th, 2566, spanning 13 days.

Getting to Know Phra Ratchawang Derm

Phra Ratchawang Derm, or the old royal palace of Thonburi, is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River at the mouth of the Bangkak Canal. It is strategically positioned, featuring sturdy fortifications that allowed for long-range observations and proximity to the river routes during its time.

Another significant aspect of Phra Ratchawang Derm is that it served as the royal residence for several Thai monarchs, including King Rama I, King Rama II, and King Rama IV.

Inside Phra Ratchawang Derm, numerous historically important landmarks can be found:

Thong Phra Rong (North Audience Hall): This is the northern throne, used for royal processions and important ceremonies. It features a grand hall with raised brick flooring and a gabled roof adorned with decorative elements like golden spires and finials.

Phra Thi Nang Kwang (South Audience Hall): This is the southern throne that connects the central area with the Thong Phra Rong. Inside this section, the throne is the location where the royal insignia of King Taksin the Great is kept.

Phra Tamnak Kheg Khu: This double-storey building is believed to have been constructed during the early days of the Rattanakosin era (King Rama I-III) and was subsequently renovated. The original design is Chinese-inspired.

Phra Tamnak Kheg Khu Grand: This building was constructed during the reign of King Rama IV while he was residing in Thonburi. The unique Western-style architecture marked a transition from traditional Thai design.

The King Taksin Shrine: Located north of the Audience Hall, this shrine houses the royal statue of King Taksin the Great in a standing posture, holding a sword with rays of light. It was built during King Rama IX’s reign in 2443 B.E.

Green Pavilion: This building was originally constructed to serve as a naval training center, and it was later converted into a medical facility for naval cadets. It is a one-story wooden structure located in the eastern corner of the palace, on the premises known as “Khao Din,” a small hill within the palace walls.

Witsai Prasit Fort: Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, this fort was originally known as “Bangkok Fort” and was constructed during the Ayutthaya period. King Taksin expanded and renovated the fort, giving it its current name. It is now used for ceremonial events and flag hoisting.

Phra Ratchawang Derm is more than just a historical site; it’s a place where you can connect with the rich heritage and relive the memories of the great King Taksin the Great.

Please note that visiting Phra Ratchawang Derm typically requires advanced booking, and fees are applicable, with adults charged at 100 Baht and children at 50 Baht.
