Luce: Christianity’s New Mascot for a New Generation

In recent years, Christianity has made clear efforts to expand its reach, hoping to connect with a wider, younger audience. The latest step in this journey is the Vatican’s unveiling of ‘Luce,’ a new mascot designed specifically to appeal to today’s youth.

The announcement came this past Monday, when the Vatican introduced Luce—Italian for “light”—as the face of its new campaign to bring the younger generation closer to the faith. Luce’s debut is also tied to the upcoming Holy Year of Jubilee in 2025, an event intended to welcome pilgrims worldwide.

Luce’s design is playful yet symbolic. The mascot is a cheerful cartoon figure dressed as a pilgrim, sporting a yellow raincoat, a cross-bearing rosary, and striking blue hair. A shell symbol is featured in Luce’s eyes, nodding to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage—a path deeply rooted in Christian tradition.

According to Archbishop Fisichella, who leads the Vatican’s centenary celebration committee, Luce is part of a broader effort to leverage ‘pop culture’—a language that resonates deeply with young people. By embracing this medium, the Vatican hopes to open new doors to meaningful conversations with today’s generation.

Luce premiered at the Lucca Comics and Games festival in Italy, a lively event celebrating comics, video games, and fantasy culture. There, Luce appeared alongside three other characters—Fe, Xin, and Sky—symbolizing fellow pilgrims for the 2025 Jubilee.

Italian designer Simone Legno, founder of the pop culture brand Tokidoki, shared that Luce and friends are set to greet visitors at the Holy See’s Pavilion at the 2025 Expo in Osaka, Japan. Legno’s goal is to captivate a broad audience, spanning everyone from curious visitors to devoted believers.

Despite Luce’s friendly appearance, reactions have been mixed. Some conservative Christians feel that using a cartoon mascot to represent faith is overly modern, even misguided, for expressing Christianity’s values.

Yet, it’s hard to deny that the Vatican is adapting to a fast-paced, digital world. In a culture that communicates at lightning speed, pop culture offers a powerful tool for building connections, making Christianity feel ‘more accessible’ to the next generation.
