National Research Expo: Saving the Planet and Driving the Economy

The 2024 National Research Expo is all about harnessing research to propel Thailand’s economy and society toward sustainable growth. This year’s focus is on “marketable research” and the implementation of the BCG (Bio-Circular-Green) model to protect the environment.

The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) is hosting the 19th National Research Expo from August 26–30, 2024, at Centara Grand Hotel and the Bangkok Convention Centre, CentralWorld, Bangkok.

One of the key themes this year is environmental sustainability, with research and innovations aimed at advancing Thailand’s economy using the BCG model. This approach prioritizes minimizing waste in production processes, ensuring that research outcomes have a minimal environmental impact.

Ms. Supamas Isaraphakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony titled “Driving Thailand with Science, Research, and Innovation.” She emphasized the importance of science and innovation in moving Thailand forward, saying, “Science, research, and innovation are the keys to overcoming the challenges of today. Investing in these areas will provide a solid foundation for economic, social, and environmental growth. By developing human resources, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and applying research outcomes to real-world challenges, we can enhance Thailand’s competitiveness and create a sustainable future.”

Dr. Wiparat De-Ong, Director of the NRCT, highlighted the growing role of research in solving critical national issues, especially during times of economic slowdown. She noted that research can address specific problems, generate income, and tackle environmental issues like PM2.5 dust pollution. She also pointed out that research plays a crucial role in tourism, adding value by preserving and promoting cultural heritage.

This year’s expo will feature the “Marketable Research” exhibition, showcasing successful projects that have made the leap from research to production, serving as inspiration for the next generation of researchers. Some key areas of focus include research for sustainable environmental management, such as transitioning toward a low-carbon society, managing natural resources, and minimizing the impact of climate change.

Attendees will have the chance to explore over 983 research projects and innovations, participate in seminars, and witness the commercial potential of many groundbreaking ideas. The goal is to foster collaboration between researchers, industries, and the public, helping to elevate Thailand’s global competitiveness and prepare for future challenges.

Ticy City invites everyone to join the 2024 National Research Expo, a showcase of Thailand’s leading research and innovations. The expo is designed to encourage the commercialization of research and inspire the creation of innovations that meet the country’s needs.

Among the showcased projects are a cable-operated rubber robot, a water-tracking buoy using radio signals, and Buriram’s unique textiles transformed into modern fashion products. Other highlights include innovations like tablet-based drug addiction treatments, diesel fuel additives that reduce PM2.5 emissions, and biodegradable packaging made from thermoplastic starch.

In the food sector, innovations include low-sodium, low-potassium fish sauce, peptide-rich sausages made from golden apple snails, and new methods for producing fermented fish from Phayao. There are also cutting-edge projects focused on boosting the medicinal properties of mushrooms.

Environmental research remains a top priority, with initiatives such as tree-based dust reduction solutions for urban areas, biochar for soil enhancement and carbon capture, upcycling plastic waste, and transforming palm oil waste into valuable products.
