Sala Chalermkrung Stands Strong at 91 – No Quake Damage, The Show Must Go On!

Bangkok’s historic royal theater remains safe and intact, continuing to showcase world-class Thai cultural performances.

Sala Chalermkrung: A Timeless Icon of Thai Performing Arts

When the earthquake in Bangkok struck on March 28, reports surfaced about damaged buildings across the city. But Sala Chalermkrung, Thailand’s first royal theater, emerged completely safe and structurally intact at 91 years old. The beloved cultural landmark remains strong, preserving its historic architecture while continuing to offer mesmerizing Khon performances, live music, and classic theater productions.

For extra assurance, an expert team from the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning conducted a comprehensive inspection on March 30. Their assessment found no structural damage, no cracks, and zero safety concerns. That means the show goes on. From Monday, March 31, 2568, Sala Chalermkrung resumes its scheduled performances, welcoming visitors once again.

A Legacy of Culture and Innovation

More than just a theater, Sala Chalermkrung is a royal gift from King Rama VII, presented to the Thai people in celebration of Bangkok’s 150th anniversary. Since opening its doors on July 2, 1936, it has remained a beacon of traditional Thai performing arts and a hub for cultural tourism in Bangkok.

Did you know? Sala Chalermkrung was also the first theater in Asia to install air conditioning, a groundbreaking Chilled Water System from the U.S. that replaced traditional fans and revolutionized the entertainment experience.

Designed by M.C. Samaichaloem Kritakara and Narot Photiprasat, the theater’s modern yet timeless design masterfully blends Thai and Western architectural influences. Its debut screening was the foreign sound film Under the Sea, a true milestone in Thailand’s cinematic history.

Experience World-Class Thai Performances

Today, Sala Chalermkrung remains Bangkok’s premier destination for live entertainment, hosting movies, stage plays, classical concerts, and traditional Thai Khon performances.
