Celebrates a Decade of Thai Creativity, Community, and Connection
YouTube Thailand today celebrates its 10th anniversary as the most loved and watched video platform in the country. YouTube plays a significant role in all aspects of Thai people’s lives as talented creators have transformed it into a cultural phenomenon, a source of information, a platform for education, and a hub for entertainment. From Robloak channel that takes you around the world and learns historical facts from those places, to Lhorn Diary that presents 3D animated folklore and ghost stories. Thailand’s vibrant culture has found a global stage on YouTube.
Over the past decade, YouTube has witnessed the rise of a thriving community of Thai creators, storytellers, educators, and entrepreneurs. From Bangkok to Chiang Mai, these creators have shared their talents, passions, and unique perspectives with the world, inspiring millions and building successful careers.
Mukpim Anantachai, Head of YouTube Partnerships, Thailand & Vietnam, “Thailand’s creativity knows no bounds, and we’ve been honored to witness its flourishing on YouTube over the past decade. From emerging artists to established voices, the Thai community has used our platform to share stories, express themselves, and connect with the world. As we embark on our next chapter, we remain dedicated to nurturing this creativity and providing a space where Thai culture can shine even brighter.”
Beyond entertainment, YouTube has truly become a powerful tool for education, cultural preservation, and social change in Thailand. Students have accessed online courses, communities have documented their traditions, and activists have raised awareness for important causes.
The Thai YouTube community has flourished, with over a thousand channels now boasting more than a million subscribers. Back in 2014, there were only four channels to have crossed this milestone. YouTube has championed this growth, empowering creators through monetization tools like the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), Channel Memberships, and features like Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. In 2023, YouTube introduced Shorts monetization and lowered the YPP eligibility criteria, enabling more Thai creators to turn their passions into livelihoods.
Saranee Boonritthongchai, Group Marketing Manager – YouTube, South East Asia, said, “YouTube has given Thai creators the tools to not only share their stories and passions but also build sustainable careers. We’re committed to continuously expanding opportunities for Thai creators to monetize their content and reach global audiences.”
Key Milestones of YouTube Thailand:
- 2014: YouTube.co.th launches in Thailand.
- 2022: Super features launch in Thailand.
- 2023: YouTube expands the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) in Thailand, giving creators early access to fan funding features such as Channel Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks.
- 2024: YouTube celebrates 10 years in Thailand as the #1 video platform.
Recognizing the potential AI can bring to creators, artists and the creative industry, YouTube recently announced AI experiments to selected creators before rolling out more broadly this year, including “Dream Screen” which allows users to generate stunning video or image backgrounds for Shorts with a simple idea or prompt. YouTube will continue to introduce new innovations in a responsible way, ensuring transparency and protecting the community, for example, the recent disclosure requirement for creators when making realistic content using Gen AI.
YouTube’s 10th anniversary in Thailand marks not only a celebration of its past achievements but also a commitment to the future. The platform will continue to invest in empowering Thai creators, promoting responsible content creation, and fostering a safe and inclusive online environment. To celebrate this milestone, YouTube Thailand will be hosting an exhibition showcasing YouTube Thailand’s key milestones over the past decade, workshops with leading Thai creators who will share their experiences on YouTube and video production techniques, booths offering consultations for aspiring YouTube creators, and mini games by leading MCN. These events will be open to the public free of charge from May 29-31, 2024 at Sphere Gallery 2, the Emsphere shopping mall.
