Exploring Győr, Hungary: A Journey Through History, Culture, and Serendipitous Adventures in a Charming European City

Hungary

Five years ago, I unexpectedly found myself on a journey to Győr, Hungary, when my son was selected to represent Thailand in the World Robot Olympiad 2019. This surprise opportunity introduced us not only to the world of robotics but also to the charming city of Győr, rich in history, beautiful architecture, and warm Hungarian hospitality.

After traveling through Vienna, we arrived in Győr and settled into a lovely hotel, just a 30-minute drive from Edutus University, where the competition was being held. Our adventure was about to begin.

Discovering Győr

Győr is in Northwestern Hungary and is known for its industries, commerce, educational institutions, and rich culture. It’s one of Hungary’s most innovative and rapidly developing cities. As the capital of Győr-Moson-Sopron County, it has around 135,000 residents, making it the sixth-largest city in Hungary. Its central location provides easy access to Slovakia, Austria, Lake Balaton, and Budapest.

Exploring Széchenyi Square

At the heart of Győr is Széchenyi Square, a beautiful plaza surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings. Walking into this historic square feels like stepping back in time. One of the highlights is the Benedictine Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture from the 17th century. Its intricate frescoes and ornate interior are truly captivating, making it a must-see for history and architecture lovers.

Győr National Theatre

Győr National Theatre is a hub of artistic expression in the city. Even if you only admire its stunning exterior, the theatre’s architecture is worth a visit. The elegant façade hints at the grandeur inside, where performances range from classical dramas to modern productions. Check the schedule in advance if you want to experience a show and dive into Győr’s vibrant arts scene.

Győr’s Heritage – Rómer Flóris Art and History Museum

The Rómer Flóris Art and History Museum is a great place to explore Győr’s rich heritage. The museum features exhibits on local history, archaeological finds, and contemporary art. You can wander through halls filled with artifacts that tell the story of Győr’s evolution from medieval times to its present-day status as a cultural hub.

Bishop’s Castle and Püspökvár-Toronykilátó

The Bishop’s Castle is a historical treasure in Győr. Built in the 13th century, this castle has witnessed much of the city’s history. Originally a fortress, it later became a residence for bishops and nobles. Today, its well-preserved walls and architecture provide a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Next to the castle is the Püspökvár-Toronykilátó, or Bishop’s Tower. Climbing the tower offers breathtaking views of Győr and its surroundings, including the Rába River and the city’s historic buildings.

Riverside Walks

Győr’s beauty extends along the Rába River, perfect for leisurely walks. You can join a guided tour to learn about historical landmarks like the Benedictine Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Walking along the river, you’ll see the Bishop’s Castle and enjoy the serene waters of the Rába.

Farewell to Győr

As we left Győr, the memories of its charm and beauty stayed with us. It’s a city that honors its past while embracing the future, making it a must-visit destination. Whether you’re a history lover, a foodie, or simply a traveler at heart, Győr has something special to offer.

So, next time you’re planning a trip, consider Győr—a place where history and modernity blend seamlessly, offering new discoveries at every turn. Our journey began with a robotics competition but ended with a deep appreciation for a city that knows how to captivate and inspire.
