Makro and Lotus Distribute Surplus Food to Promote Sustainability with a Goal of Zero Waste by 2030

Food Waste

When it comes to “sustainability,” it’s not just a trend but a vital issue recognized by various sectors. Especially in business, where many have incorporated sustainability into their strategic goals. CP Axtra Public Company Limited is among these businesses.

As part of their strategic plan, CP Axtra, the company behind Makro and Lotus, is driving its business forward with sustainability in mind. In 2023, CP Axtra successfully reduced food waste by distributing over 3,000 tons of surplus food through three main channels to partner organizations. The surplus food was divided into:

  1. Edible surplus food.
  2. Surplus food that is not suitable for human consumption but safe for animals, donated to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, and other organizations.
  3. Surplus food that is unsuitable for both humans and animals, which is processed into organic fertilizer and EM (Effective Microorganisms) solutions for further use.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UNFAO), global food waste exceeds 1.3 billion tons annually, equating to one-third of the food produced for human consumption each year. In Thailand alone, food waste amounts to about 17.5 million tons per year, roughly equivalent to eight and a half Rajamangala National Stadiums. Food waste is a global issue.

CP Axtra is dedicated to maximizing the efficient management of surplus food. Recently, Makro and Lotus continued their “Good Food for Kids” project, providing quality ingredients for school lunches in underprivileged schools. This ensures children have access to nutritious, safe, and properly prepared meals.

This year, CP Axtra donated over 2.6 million baht to this initiative, aiming to provide over 3 million meals to more than 30,000 students in over 130 schools nationwide during the 2024 academic year. The “Good Food for Kids” project, now in its seventh year, has reached over 1,000 schools in 77 provinces, benefiting over 120,000 students by providing access to nutritious food.

Additionally, educational activities on the importance of healthy eating are organized for students, continuously benefiting Thai society and reinforcing CP Axtra’s role as a model organization in sustainable business practices.

Given that food, one of the four essential needs of humanity, has become a significant waste issue impacting our planet, addressing the “food waste” crisis effectively is crucial.
