The legendary Thai luxury hotel, Dusit Thani Bangkok, has officially reopened in grand style, delivering a modern yet elegant experience that caters to today’s discerning travelers while embracing its storied past. Nestled beside the sprawling Lumphini Park, this renowned hotel now boasts luxurious new rooms and its signature Thai hospitality, establishing itself once again as a prominent landmark in the heart of Bangkok.
First opened in 1970, Dusit Thani Bangkok has long been a symbol of elegance and heritage. Over the decades, it has welcomed travelers from around the world and played host to numerous prominent figures. The hotel’s distinctive blend of modernity and traditional Thai art, architecture, and craftsmanship has left an indelible mark on Bangkok’s hospitality scene.
Suphajee Suthumpun, CEO of Dusit Thani Public Company Limited, spoke of the vision that began with the hotel’s founder, Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui, whose passion for elevating Thailand’s hotel industry led her to create an establishment that reflected the beauty of Bangkok while showcasing Thai culture to the world. “Even after more than half a century, Dusit Thani Bangkok remains a top hotel that continues to preserve the beauty of Thai art,” Suphajee said. “Our mission today goes beyond building a contemporary hotel. We aim to pass on our cultural and architectural heritage to future generations, creating a space that holds deep emotional significance for our guests.”
As part of this preservation effort, the hotel temporarily closed in 2019 to collaborate with experts from Silpakorn University to meticulously record and conserve many of its iconic features. Nine distinctive elements representing the soul of Dusit Thani have been revitalized and showcased in the new hotel, including:
Golden Spire: A symbol of the hotel, this golden spire was originally designed over 50 years ago by Japanese architect Yozo Shibata. Inspired by the spire of Wat Arun, it has been reimagined to blend tradition with modernity, now featuring a larger, transparent design that maintains the essence of the original.
Library 1918: Formerly an Italian restaurant, this space is now a homage to King Rama VI, decorated with hand-carved wooden details and personal items related to the King. It serves as a versatile event space for intimate occasions, honoring Thailand’s rich cultural history.
Trees of Memory: The garden features tropical trees, including a frangipani tree originally planted by Thanpuying Chanut. Preserved during construction, these trees now offer a serene green space for guests to relax.
Signature Cascading Waterfall: The iconic nine-tier waterfall returns, symbolizing a journey through the three worlds and six heavens of Thai cosmology. Surrounded by lush flowers, the waterfall continues to provide tranquility to all who visit.
Golden Façade: The hotel’s façade now features a modern golden frame, inspired by the original design. This unique architectural element acts as a golden photography frame, perfectly capturing panoramic views of Lumphini Park from the hotel’s rooms.
Signature Lobby Ceiling: The new lobby ceiling design integrates modern touches with the original stepped ceiling concept, creating a grand entrance with a golden glow that enhances the space’s elegance.
Decorative Lobby Screens: Inspired by traditional Thai mural art, the curved lobby screens evoke images of clouds, reflecting Dusit Thani’s namesake—heaven in Thai cosmology.
Benjarong Pillars: Two grand Benjarong pillars, each weighing over 10 tons, have been carefully restored. Originally designed by renowned artist Phra Phiboon Suwannakut, these pillars now stand proudly as a testament to Dusit Thani’s artistic heritage.
Heritage Suites: Embodying traditional Thai design, the suites combine intricate wooden details with luxurious furnishings. Large windows with gold frames offer sweeping views of Lumphini Park, ensuring an unforgettable stay.
With 39 floors and 257 spacious rooms and suites, all starting at 50 square meters, Dusit Thani Bangkok offers unmatched views of the city’s skyline and green parklands. The newly designed spaces blend contemporary luxury with subtle Thai influences, delivering a refined experience that seamlessly integrates modern technology with traditional elegance.
Guests can now explore the first phase of Dusit Thani’s reopening, including its meeting and event spaces, such as the Napalai Grand Ballroom. In the food and beverage sector, the Grand Lobby Bar invites guests to unwind with a signature afternoon tea while overlooking the nine-tier waterfall. The Pavilion Restaurant serves meticulously crafted Thai and Cantonese cuisine, and Dusit Gourmet offers a laid-back atmosphere for guests to enjoy freshly baked goods, all-day breakfasts, and a range of Thai, Asian, and Western dishes.
