China’s National Day Festival, also known as Golden Week, is one of the longest holidays for Chinese citizens. A recent survey by Agoda, the digital travel platform, shows Thailand has emerged as one of the top five travel destinations for Chinese tourists during this period.
Agoda’s data also reveals a 137% surge in searches for overseas accommodations compared to last year, as the week-long holiday from October 1-7, 2024, approaches.
Golden Week is a prime travel time for Chinese tourists, who often take advantage of extended holidays during both the Chinese New Year and National Day, offering a full week for vacations.
Last year, the top five destinations for Chinese tourists included Tokyo, Seoul, Osaka, Kyoto, and Bangkok. This year, Seoul has overtaken Tokyo to claim the number one spot, with Bali making its debut in the rankings.
Bangkok and Osaka continue to be highly sought-after destinations, securing 4th and 5th place, respectively.
Top 5 Destinations for Chinese Tourists During Golden Week (based on Agoda’s accommodation search data):
- Seoul, South Korea
- Tokyo, Japan
- Bali, Indonesia
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Osaka, Japan
Agoda’s executives highlighted the increase in international travel searches during Golden Week, reflecting growing confidence among Chinese tourists in exploring new destinations and embracing different cultures. It’s exciting to see destinations like Seoul and Osaka, close to China’s eastern coast, remain favorites, alongside southern hotspots like Bangkok and Bali. This trend underscores the importance of offering a wide variety of travel options to cater to evolving preferences on Agoda’s platform.
